1. Learning Outcomes#

Key Idea

3. List

PYTHON
steps = ["login", "search", "checkout"]

steps[1] = "filter"

print(steps)

Expected Output#

TEXT
['login', 'filter', 'checkout']

List

  • daily tasks

Visual Diagram80%

Rendering diagram…

5. List vs Tuple Overview#

Feature List Tuple
Ordered sequence
Duplicate values
Position-based access

["Email", "Meeting", "Coding"]

Remember

6. List vs Set Overview#

["Python", "Java", "Python", "SQL"]

Requirement List Set
Positional sequence
Duplicate values
Index-based access

PYTHON
participants = ["Asha", "Ravi", "Asha"]

unique_participants = set(participants)

print(len(participants))
print(len(unique_participants))

Expected Output#

TEXT
3
2

Common Mistake

7. List vs Dictionary Overview#

PYTHON
scores = [78, 85, 91]

PYTHON
student_scores = {
    "Asha": 78,
    "Ravi": 85,
    "Meera": 91
}

PYTHON
scores = [78, 85, 91]

student_scores = {
    "Asha": 78,
    "Ravi": 85,
    "Meera": 91
}

print(scores[1])
print(student_scores["Ravi"])

Expected Output#

TEXT
85
85

Output

student_scores["Ravi"] म्हणजे:

Requirement List Dictionary
Main structure Ordered sequence Key-value mapping
Named lookup

Key Idea

8. Ordered Data Requirement

Position Value
First 50
Second 10
Third 30

Order

Playlist

Songs

["Intro", "Main Song", "Final Song"]

["Open file", "Read data", "Generate report"]

9. Mutable Data Requirement#

List mutable

PYTHON
tasks = ["read", "practice"]

tasks[1] = "revise"

print(tasks)

Expected Output#

TEXT
['read', 'revise']

Mutability practically

Task list

Application state मधील ordered values update होऊ शकतात.

Fixed data

Requirement Strong Starting Choice
List Ordered + mutable
Ordered sequence आणि fixed intent Tuple Ordered + immutable
Unique values मुख्य requirement Set Uniqueness
Key ला value जोडायची Dictionary Key-value mapping

Scenario: Shopping Cart#

Items

User products

Scenario: Fixed Coordinate#

Scenario: Unique Skill Names#

Same skill

Scenario: Student Information#

  4. Duplicate values

12. Practical Collection Choice#

13. Interview Preparation#

When would you prefer a list over a tuple in Python?Show Answer

I would prefer a list when I need an ordered sequence whose contents are expected to change during program execution. Lists are mutable, while tuples are generally used when the sequence is intended to remain fixed.

Key Points:

  • Both list and tuple are ordered.
  • List is mutable.
  • Tuple is immutable.
  • The choice should reflect the intended behavior of the data.

Why interviewer asks this:

The interviewer wants to check whether you select a collection based on requirements instead of using lists everywhere.

What is the main difference between a list and a set when choosing a collection?Show Answer

A list is appropriate when positional order and duplicate values may matter. A set is appropriate when uniqueness and membership are the main requirements.

Key Points:

  • List supports positional sequence.
  • List can contain duplicates.
  • Set focuses on unique values.
  • Set should not be used when positional order is a requirement.

Why interviewer asks this:

The interviewer wants to verify that you understand the semantic purpose of common Python collections.

When should you use a dictionary instead of a list?Show Answer

Use a dictionary when values are naturally associated with keys and the program needs key-based lookup. Use a list when the data is primarily an ordered sequence of items accessed by position.

Key Points:

  • List represents a sequence.
  • Dictionary represents key-value mappings.
  • List normally uses indexes for positional access.
  • Dictionary uses keys for meaningful lookup.

Why interviewer asks this:

Collection selection affects code clarity and how naturally the data model represents the problem.

14. Chapter Recap#
